California Redistribution Sees $4 Billion In Redevelopment Revenue

That put an end to agencies that oversaw the revitalization of Chinatown and Bunker Hill in Los Angeles, Old Town in Pasadena, the Pine Avenue streetscape in Long Beach and the 19th and Sunrise neighborhood in San Bernardino. "Most of those cities had their own redevelopment agencies," Alsop said. "Now that money is no longer obligated for redevelopment, they can use it http://sangqypb.unblog.fr/2013/07/06/hollywood-re-accredited-by-safety-alliance/ for whatever they want, such as operations, services, economic development." Although the state report shows Los Angeles has received nearly $81.7 million over the last two years, Assistant CAO Ben Ceja estimated the actual total is closer to $105 million because the city continues to receive revenue from projects that were in the works when the redevelopment agencies were abolished. He said L.A. has used the redevelopment money to bolster its contingency fund and to cover shortfalls in department budgets. Los Angeles and about 70 of Los Angeles County's 88 cities received redevelopment money because of projects within their boundaries. They include Long Beach, at $31.4 million; Burbank, $16.7 million; Monterey Park, $3.5 million; and West Covina, $1.75 million.

University of Southern California under federal investigation for handling of rapes

The sex discrimination probe by the U.S. Department of Education came in response to a complaint by the school's Student Coalition Against Rape. Tucker Reed, a student who founded the group earlier this year, said the university did not respond properly when she reported being sexually assaulted. RELATED: UCONN PROFESSOR ROBERT MILLER UNDER INVESTIGATION "I blogged openly about the details of my rape and the university's abuses and watched as my inbox filled with emails from fellow students who had experienced the same injustices and the same silencing," Reed told reporters on Monday. Jody Shipper, the school's chief of equity and diversity, said the university was told by federal officials that the complaint had been filed in May by two students who alleged sex discrimination based on the university's handling of the reports of assaults.

Dronenburg, a Republican who was elected as San Diego County's assessor-recorder-clerk in 2010 and who has been known chiefly for his views on http://www.journalhome.com/nickyeakf/390817/suspect-in-hollywood-stabbing-had-history-of-mental-illness-arrests.html tax issues, also argues that county clerks aren't bound by orders from the governor, the state attorney general and the state officials who oversee marriage records. He is being represented by Rancho Santa Fe lawyer Charles LiMandri, who donated $10,000 and loaned another http://www.purevolume.com/ferminyyqs $27,000 to the campaigns to qualify and pass Proposition 8, according to state campaign finance records. The state high court has asked for more written arguments on those issues by Aug. 8. The court last week rejected a similar request for a temporary hold on same-sex marriages from the sponsors of Proposition 8, who have made arguments similar to Dronenburg's about the scope of the trial court's injunction. Lawyers for Proposition 8's visite site backers also have argued that because the U.S. Supreme Court did not rule directly on the measure's constitutionality, state officials are bound by state law to enforce it.

California court rejects bid to halt gay marriages in state

Californias Proposition 30 increased state tax rates for those earning $250,000 to $300,000 a year to 10.3%, up from 9.3%. For $1 million-plus-earners, Californias rate is 13.3%, up from a prior top rate http://durankvqu.gather.com/ of 10.3%. By comparison, the combined state and local top rate in New York is 12.7%. Combined with federal rates and even sales taxes, the mix is causing some even outside the professional sports stratosphere to think critically about where to live. Although Florida and Texas are both attractive no-tax states, there is debate about how large an impact taxes have on moves even by high income taxpayers.
